Ankle sprain refers to the stretching or tearing of the ankle ligaments, usually as a result of sudden over stretching. They can occur on either or both of the ligaments on the inside or outside of the ankle joint.
Ankle sprains often happen when there’s a history of ankle or foot injury or when there is pre-existing bio-mechanical fault of the ankle or foot. An injury typically occurs when the ankle is suddenly twisted during sports or by stepping off an uneven surface. X rays or MRI scans are often useful tools to diagnose the extent of the ankle and foot injury.
Your physiotherapist will explain your injury and what they can do to help you.
